Brunei Societies all over the UK showed their love for their beloved country by celebrating our country's National Day and the Brunei Bristol Society was no exception. With the help of some very dedicated individuals, we threw a celebration that we hope the Society members will never forget.
In the morning of the 25th of February 2012, Brustol members gathered near the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge which crosses the Avon Gorge, ready for our first activity, The Bristol City Challenge. The event was inspired by the popular tv show the amazing race and put together by one of our Brustol members and some keen volunteers. It was the first of what would hopefully become one of our society's annual events. at 9am participants arrived, greeting each other with eager faces, ready for the day to kick off. After some warm up exercises, team leaders were chosen to pick their teams. Teams consisted of a mix of first, second and third year students so members had the chance to work together and got to know one another better.
When the signal to start was given, participants launched to the first task. The challenges were made to test their Brunei know-how and included quizzes, a game of charades of the Perambahan Brunei as well as some physical tasks for a challenge. And no race would be complete without an eating challenge involving a nasty combination of some traditional Bruneian food. Participants dashed across Bristol, going to checkpoints such as the University of Bristol and Cabot circus.
At Cabot, participants had to draw a scale drawing of the Panji-Panji before they were given the next clue. As the day approached 12pm, the first of the participants arrived at the final checkpoint, the Harbourside. At the end of the race, participants were treated to light refreshments and a chance to discuss the morning's events.
But the celebration did not end after the race as all the members were invited to Tikka Flame at the Harbourside for a National Day Dinner. At 6.30 pm, members gathered once more to enjoy a delicious meal together and a chance to be with friends from home after weeks of studying and work.
Brustol members also had the chance to dress up for the occasion. After dinner, the winners of the Bristol City Challenge were announced and medals were awarded to the victors. Finally a group photo of the largest gathering of Brustol members was taken outside the restaurant to end our day of celebration.
